On October 1, 1811, the first steamboat reached New Orleans viâ the Mississippi. It was called the New Orleans, and was owned by Nicholas J. Roosevelt. It left from Pittsburgh and carried a crew of nine, four servants, a dog, and Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt.
