Truman Capote is Born

The American writer Truman Capote (né Truman Streckfus Persons) was born on this day in New Orleans in 1924. He spent some of his childhood in Monroeville, Alabama, where his mother's family lived. (He appears as the little boy Dill in his neighbor Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mockingbird.) Capote was the last name of his stepfather. He spent much of his younger life in New York City, where he was an infant terrible in literary circles. His novel In Cold Blood made him a national celebrity.
