1990 Shell dredging is prohibited

Shell Dredging is halted in Lake Pontchartrain. The dredging, which had been ongoing for over 60 years, wreaked havoc on the Lake's ecosystem.

1998 Hurricane Georges destroys most Hayne Blvd. Camps

September, 1998: Hurricane Georges wipes out all but 6 Hayne Boulevard camps. Also destroyed was Fitzgerald's restaurant at West End. Badly damaged was Brunings Restaurant. Over 70 camps were wiped out in this hurricane.

1990s UNO Research & Technology Park

The University of New Orleans attains the land which was the old Pontchartrain Beach at Milneburg. The historic Milneburg/Port Pontchartrain Lighthouse (1832) is now a "prop" near the swimming pool at the Hilton Garden Inn Lakefront hotel. How sad.

1999 Land Use Plan quote

"The District contains historically significant sites including West End Park and West End Lighthouse and the seafood restaurants found near the marina. These restaurants, built on pilings, are the few remaining examples of a building type formerly found throughout the lakefront region." The only other examples of this building type are the 6 remaining Hayne Boulevard camps. 1993 Amtrack

GE (General Electric Transportation Systems) issued Amtrak Lithograph tilted “The Monoque”. Railroad artist Robert West was commissioned by GE in 1993 to produce this artwork featuring Amtrak AMD-103’s (Genesis) leading Amtrak’s “Southern Crescent” running Northbound across Lake Ponchatrain to Slidell. This Lithograph was produced and was given out to customers, and handed out at industry trade shows, but was not available to the general public. The dimensions of the print are: 23-1/4" x 13-1/4" with the actual Image size being 21-3/4" x 10-3/4".
