817 Common - Then Jesuit High School

This photograph was taken in 1925 and shows Jesuit High School, located then at the corner of Baronne and Common. Constructed at the turn of the century, it was razed in 1925 to make room for the erection of the Pere Marquette Building. To the left of the school is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, just up Baronne from Canal Street. Popularly referred to as the Jesuit Church, it is still standing. On the right hand side, beginning with the ninth window, is the school chapel. The circular stained windows on the top floor were removed from the structure and now hang in St. Ignatius Hall on the Carrollton Avenue campus. Later in 1925 the school would be housed temporarily in what was known as the "Rubber Factory," The Edgar B. Murray Supply Company. Jesuit High's new building, and present site, at Carrollton and Banks was completed in 1926. The school was founded in 1847.
