What's Out There Now

Of hundreds of camps once lining the lakeshore from West End to Paris Road there are currently 6 camps remaining.
The Hayne Blvd. and Little Woods camps are hoping to acquire Historic Landmark status which would protect them from undue destruction.

"The Camps" represent a unique and cherished aspect of our local cultural lifestyle. In addition, they are also also important in our city's early formulation of Jazz. They have been imortalized in art, literature, and popular music. They represent architectural styles indicative to New Orleans.

Shortly after Hurricane Georges left it's mark portions of the lake in the camps area were declared safe for swimming--for the first time in 28 years. It would be wonderful if the destroyed camps could be rebuilt for new generations to enjoy the wonders of the lake.
