June 19, 1909, The chartering of Greater New Orleans Homestead

It was the year that a couple of New Orleans attorneys decided to increase the opportunities for home-ownership to the residents in the Greater New Orleans Area.

On June 19, 1909, their dream was realized with the chartering of Greater New Orleans Homestead.

The same two attorneys, Jacob D. Dresner and Henry Mooney, became members of the original board of directors. Joseph Dresner, Jacob's brother, became GNO Homestead's first managing officer-a position he would hold for the next 58 years.

Throughout the 91 years of operations, Greater New Orleans Homestead evolved into a full-service federal savings bank. The name GNO Homestead no longer represented the number and types of services offered at the bank...and for this reason, on August 29, 2000 Greater New Orleans Homestead amended its charter and changed its name to Bank of New Orleans.
