Airline Motors

Airline Motors has been a favorite road trip stop of ours for a long time. Breakfast is my favorite meal at "The Airline" prior to a ride up the River Road or maybe a visit to Pontchatoula. The hours of business have changed since the website was designed and they are: Monday through Thursday 6a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday open 24 hours; Sunday open all day until 10 p.m. Love that art deco, inside and out!  My favorite breakfast there is crawfish omelet with grits, biscuits and a bunch of strawberry jelly!

We went for lunch. I had the gumbo, the hubby had the chicken fried steak with white gravy. The gumbo was watery with tiny little shrimp but Mr. Fury enjoyed his steak. On your recommendation CopCop, I will have to go for breakfast soon.
P.S. My grandpa was a state trooper (Troop B) and was in Airline Motors quite a bit.

We ate there occasionally many, many years ago. If I remember correctly, the food was good home cookin', and I think this is the place where I especially liked the side dishes, such as smothered eggplant.

I know that eggplant isn't to everyone's taste, but I love it. My mama used to fry very thin slices of eggplant golden-brown, and serve her delicious spaghetti (and spaghetti "gravy") with the eggplant slices on top, sprinkled with parmesan. Talk about good!

Good fried eggplant is something that you just can't find in a restaurant. Mama would slice it very thin, then line a bowl with the thin slices, place another bowl on top, then a brick on the outside bowl. This mashed out the extra water so that when she breaded and fried it, it was crisp. Delicious.
