Watermelon Stand

Seems like I can remember going somewhere when I was REALLY young that was around the upper Carrollton area but sat on the New Basin Canal. There was some sort of fruit stand that we'd go to eat watermelon. Anybody remember where this was? My mother isn't around to ask her. She used to take me there in the summer, but I can't for the life of me remember where this was. Any ideas?

I've heard stories about boats carrying watermelons (and all sorts of other stuff) from the lake to the New Basin Canal and down into the city. I think most of this cargo came from across the lake in Madisonville. But I'd sure like to more about this.

I lived just off the New Basin Canal until I was 9 or 10 years old. I have vague memories of the streetcar line and the greens alongside the canal where people used to fly kites. My aunt predicted that the road on the other side of the basin would someday be a major thoroughfare with lots of development along it - my mom was very skeptical, to say the least. Aunt Grace was right - it's now Veterans Blvd. (Veterans Highway at first). Guess she was a visionary!
