cayoodles =neighborhood dogs,usually of mixed breed, as in "Grammaw wuz awlways pitchin' stuff at da cayoodles pyrootin' aroun' her gawbidge cans before the mule-drawn gawbidge wagon "came by her house".

doodle bugs = sow bugs, milkbugs, and in North Carolina as "roly polys". Example: "As kids we were fascinated with the way Doodle Bugs rolled up into perfect little balls when you'd give them a nudge".

lightnin' bugs a.k.a. lightning bugs = fire flies

mosquito hawks = dragon flies
