1804 Louisiana Purchase was divided into Territories of

On this day in 1804, the Louisiana Purchase was divided into the Territories
of
Orleans and Louisiana. The former became a state as
Louisiana in 1812, the latter then becoming Missouri Territory.


Photo shows an early view of Bayou St. John which was fundamental to the
early life of New Orleans. In 1803 a canal was dredged from the Bayou toward the
City's heart. It was a commercially valuable route until 1838, when Americans
built the New Basin Canal from Lake Pontchartrain into the
city.
