1954 - The new Union Railroad Station opens

The original Union Station was demolished in early 1954, shortly
after the first train arrived at the new Union Passenger Terminal, which can be seen just behind it in this photograph.

The UPT was built at a cost of $2,225,000 and replaced the city's five scattered depots. At the time of its dedication in 1954, it claimed to be the only air-conditioned station in the country and served 44 passenger trains of the eight railroads that used the terminal each day. Although the terminal was owned by the city, it was built and paid for by the railroads themselves.
